High-density developments and sprawling suburbs or slums continue to expand the world’s cities. But most cities also have unused, ignored space at their centres – and this inspired a sustainable architecture charity to challenge designers to find ways to use that space and make city growth more sustainable.
The Vancouver, Canada, branch of non-profit body Architecture for Humanity asked for sustainable prefab homes with just a 20-by-20-foot footprint: that’s 37 square metres or about the size of two parking spaces. Such designs could be mass-prefabricated before being installed in the kind of urban spaces that conventional developments can’t use.
